LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE : BESS BE FIT

When Bess contacted me to photograph a day on the beach with her, I couldn’t have been more excited!  She went to school in North Carolina, played a Division I college sport, and her longtime boyfriend is a baseball player!  We have SO much in common!  More importantly, Bess is also a fellow blogger!  I am proud to introduce you to the beautiful writer behind Bess Be Fit!  Bess Be Fit details out the journey of Bess to stay fit and live a healthy life after leaving the athletic world of college sports.  In Bess’ own words:

“I played soccer in college at Wake Forest University and after a lifetime of playing sports and training practically every day of the week, I suddenly had a lot of free time on my hands.  I wanted fitness to still remain an important part of my life, so I started my blog, Bess Be Fit, as a way of holding myself accountable and documenting my life in the process.  I aim to eat healthy but don’t deprive myself of treats, as you’ll see on a regular basis if you read my blog.  I like to workout and enjoy so many different types of exercise from running to yoga to cross-training and strength training.  Anything that lets me move and sweat and feel alive I love!  I want to help others on their fitness journey and will soon be offering online nutrition guidance and exercise plans through my blog so I can do just that!”

This Wednesday, I had the opportunity to photograph Bess by the ocean in Long Branch!  The weather was amazing and Bess…SO BEAUTIFUL!

Bess is fun, outgoing, and all around such a sweet person!  She really was a joy to photograph.

Bess is a Certified Personal Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine.  She hopes to share her same love for being active and also loving delicious, healthy food!

The sunset on Wednesday was so pretty!  Pink and blue tones filled the sky as it slowly dipped below the horizon.

Seriously Bess?!  You are GORGEOUS!!!  To read more about this talented woman, head over to Bess Be Fit today.  HAPPY FRIDAY!

Amy,
Great job on the photographs of Bess. I like the 2nd and 4th photograph, but my favorite is of Bess walking on the rocky beach!

HOW TO MAKE 38 MEALS IN 6 HOURS : CROCKPOT DAY

When Jackie first proposed the idea, my heart jumped up and down with excitement as my stomach turned over with nervousness at the same time.  Jackie wanted to see if any of the women in our life group were interested in a “CROCKPOT DAY”, a day to shop for and prepare multiple meals in just a few hours.  When we finished, we would combine the ingredients for each recipe in gallon bags and set them in our freezer until we were ready to cook them in the crockpot!  As a wife who would rather go out for dinner every night than cook…this sounded like the perfect solution!  I would spend one day preparing meals with my friends and have delicious/healthy dinners to feed my husband for the next few weeks.:) AWESOMENESS!

This past Sunday was the day!  Jackie, Suzanne and I all gathered to make 38 meals (6 different recipes) in just a few hours!  We started at the Shop Rite in Fair Lawn, NJ to pick up everything we would need.  Jackie (our captain) had created a ginormous spread sheet detailing out the exact number of each ingredient to buy. We split up, and in a little over an hour, we had filled up two shopping carts with food and checked off every item on our list.  Now it was time to check out.  Captain Jackie had also collected coupons to help us save money on our purchases.  I am not going to lie, watching our final total go down with each swipe of a coupon made me really excited.  At the end of the day, I believe we saved over $50!  We pilled our goodies in the car and headed back to Suzanne’s house to start cooking.

The next few hours went by pretty fast!  Suzanne cleaned over 70 pounds of meat, Jackie washed and chopped the veggies, and I tried my best to keep up, slicing green peppers, onions, and garlic.  Once we had prepared all the food, we began combining the needed ingredients for each recipe in gallon baggies.  In just a few hours we had made 4 bags of beef and broccoli, 6 bags of lime salsa chicken, 6 bags of chicken teriyaki, 7 bags of chicken cacciatore, 5 bags of black bean taco soup, and 4 bags of BBQ pulled pork.  This brought us to a total of 38 meals!  We finished off our hard work with hugs all around and a large pizza to share.:)

I don’t think I have EVER purchased this much food at one time.  We had two shopping carts filled to the brim!

Check out this shopping spreadsheet!  Isn’t it incredible?!

COUPONS!

To save the maximum amount of money, we decided to do three different transactions.  Watching the total go down on this last one was so fun.

Captain Jackie chopping away!:) Thank you so much for leading us…we couldn’t have done it without you.

Suzanne washing and trimming the meat.

Me cutting garlic!  Thanks Matt for the picture.

Our husbands helped a little.  Nate wrote all of the recipes and names of who they were going to on gallon bags and the boys ran back to the store for forgotten cilantro.  Thanks guys!

If you are planning a crockpot day…make sure you have plenty of bowls handy.  You will need them!

The best part of the evening?  Taking home 12 yummy meals for my family!  Fun fact: each meal came to $8.85…a much better deal than what I am used to.  Thanks again to Jackie and Suzanne for making cooking so much fun.  I am already looking forward to the next crockpot day!

That’s awesome! I’d imagine you’d need TONS of counter space to do this… I may try with my girls sometime :)

Amy,
Pretty impressive! Matt probably likes these crockpot parties!

SANTA BARBARA SUNRISE BRIDAL SESSION : CRYSTAL

Bridal photo sessions might be one of my favorite things in the entire world!  Getting to spend a couple of hours with a bride in the most beautiful dress she has ever purchased is a true honor and honestly…SO MUCH FUN!  This one on one time allows me the opportunity to capture gorgeous images of a bride who feels so pretty, confident, and beyond excited for her wedding day.  What could be better?

While I was out in Santa Barbara for UNITED I had the chance to photograph the stunning Crystal in her wedding dress.  As the sun rose over the horizon, the rolling waves glistened so brilliantly, it looked like tiny diamonds were dancing across the surface!  A big thanks to The Photography Smiths for leading such an incredible shoot.  Enjoy a few of my favorite images below!

This bridal session took place right outside of the Four Seasons…at 6 o’clock in the morning!  Waking up at sunrise provided for such gorgeous golden light!

Crystal actually lives in one of my favorite cities ever, San Diego, California.

Her genuine laughter and obvious joy for life made for such pretty pictures!

LOVE.

Styling your wedding dress with a couple of chunky necklaces can add a dramatic touch to any strapless gown.

Seriously Crystal…you are STUNNING!

As the sun rose higher in the sky, I had the opportunity to capture Crystal in front of the incredible Santa Barbara cliffs.

LOVELY!

Thank you again to everyone who made this bridal session possible.  The golden light that fills these images sorta makes me want to get up at sunrise every morning!  Sorta…kinda…okay maybe not EVERY morning.:)HAPPY WEDNESDAY!

Amy,
The photos of Crystal on the beach are amazing. My favorite is her standing and the sun coming through the right side of her head. The light highlights her hair. I also really like the 2nd from the last. She looks like she is having a lot of fun.

NANINA’S IN THE PARK WEDDING : WHITNEY + JASON

STRIKE 1!  The ball soared past Jason, a look of shock registering on his face.  Get it together he thought…this is a girl pitching to you!  STRIKE 2!  A sly smile crept its way onto Whitney’s face.  She had warmed up in secret and could tell Jason was surprised by her arm.  STRIKE 3…YOU’RE OUT, the umpire called out loudly, leaving Jason to walk off the plate in disbelief.  He couldn’t believe he had just been struck out by the pretty girl with the big brown eyes only 40 feet away.

Even though Jason had struck out at the plate (and that was not the only time Whitney struck Jason out that day), he felt like there was something special about her. He asked Whitney out on a date, and they quickly realized how much they had in common.  With a mutual love for sports, travel, and all adventure, Whitney and Jason’s days were filled with plenty of laughter. While on their trip to the Bahamas, Jason got down on one knee and proposed to Whitney in front of the rolling waves of the crystal clear turquoise ocean.  She felt herself melting with joy as she exclaimed YES, hugging Jason as the receptionist from the resort documented these precious moments on camera.  They were married March 16th at Nanina’s in the Park in front of all of their family and friends.  As Jason looked into Whitney’s eyes and promised to spend forever with the girl he loved so much, he knew in his heart he had finally hit a home run.

Whitney and Jason, I am SO happy for you two!  Thank you for giving me the honor of capturing your gorgeous wedding!  Enjoy a few of my favorite photographs from your special day below.:)

Whitney’s talented uncle Jamie actually did her hair and make-up on her wedding day.

As she was pampered, Whitney reviewed the personal vows she would recite to Jason later that day.

Whitney chose to wear a STUNNING dress by Oleg Cassini.

Whitney had not one, but THREE pairs of shoes!  They all were decorated in her favorite leopard pattern.

Whitney’s father, Bruce Driver, helped lead the New Jersey Devils to a Stanley Cup win in 1995.  Whitney is not only inspired by her parent’s drive and passion for life, she is also inspired by their marriage!

Lovely bridesmaids dresses by Alfred Angelo.

Whitney couldn’t help but be excited as her mom and close friends helped her into her wedding dress.

This father-daugther first look brought tears of happiness to both Whitney and Bruce’s eyes.

While I was photographing the girls, Mekina was capturing the guys getting ready.  I love this one of Jason opening his gift from Whitney.

Whitney pulled up to Nanina’s in the Park in a vintage white Rolls Royce.

GORGEOUSNESS!

Loving the suspenders guys.

As tiny white snowflakes trickled down from the sky and around these pretty girls, I couldn’t help but think about how romantic the entire day felt!  With the lush green pine trees in the background, it really was so beautiful.

Whitney and Jason saw each other for the first time when Whitney walked down the aisle.  From the looks on their faces it was obviously a very special and emotional moment for them both!

Whitney and Jason laughed and cried their way throughout the entire ceremony!

HAPPILY MARRIED!

Whitney and Jason can be romantic one moment…

…and completely silly the next!  What a perfect combination for an amazing relationship.

Amazing, hilarious, and totally AWESOME is the only way to describe this bridal party.:)

Whitney and Jason entered their ceremony with a burst of excitement and energy to get the party started!

One of my favorite moments was when Whitney surprised her mom with a special dance to “Mama’s Song”, recorded by their close friend Charlotte Tucci.

Toasts were followed by dancing, dancing…and lots more dancing throughout the night!

Whitney and Jason, your wedding day was simply INCREDIBLE!  Thank you for allowing me to share in such special moments in your lives.  I hope the many years you will spend together will be filled with an abundance of happiness and love!

Great photos…..loved the ones with the snow falling!

Wow! You did a fantastic job of capturing Whitney and Jason’s wedding. I think the photo of them on the bow bridge with their reflection in the water is one of the best photos you have ever taken. It is so interesting and creative. You got to love the snow in some of the photos. You captured so many different emotions that Jason and Whitney will have forever. Great job Amy!

THREE TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS : MAKING IT THROUGH TAX DAY

Spring is finally here, bringing fresh flowers, warmer weather, and of course, TAX DAY!  I don’t know about you, but numbers are not my strength.  As April 15th gets closer and closer, I thank God everyday for giving me a husband who LOVES them.  While I am editing pretty photographs in the evening, Matt is creating new excel spreadsheets or updating our Quickbooks like it is his job.  Back in October, Matt even lead a Quickbooks class at our home for photographers in the area.  He spoke on the importance of tracking cash flow in your business and briefly demonstrated how to work Quickbooks.  At the end of the discussion, he emailed everyone who attended the Cash Flow Worksheet he uses to help manage my business finances.  I was wondering if it was ever put to good use when I received this in my inbox this morning:

AMY!!!

Can you please tell Matt that his Cash Flow Projection worksheet SERIOUSLY saved my life!! Like I mentioned at Spark on Tuesday, I was super stressed about figuring out all of my accounting stuff. Especially because my accountant wants a list of expenses by category…and I hadn’t been keeping track of anything! Well, thanks to Matt’s AMAZING spreadsheet…I was able to customize the “outflows” tab and easily add my expenses to the appropriate category as I went through each of my bank and credit card statements (item by item!). Thanks to him to didn’t have to mess with Wave or Quickbooks or create an excel doc from scratch.

Long story short, a project that haunted me for months and I thought I’d never be able to manage…took me ONE DAY! I’ve customized each tab and made sure all the formulas match up…and in ONE DAY I have a whole year’s worth of finances at a glance. You have no idea how happy I am and how free I feel!

Please make sure he knows how much he helped and how thankful I am to you both for sharing!!:)

So sweet right?!  Since the Cash Flow Worksheet helped Cassi so much, I wanted to share a few more tips on how to make it through tax day!  Confession, Matt might have had something to do with this advice. (Thanks hubby!)

STEP 1: HIRE AN ACCOUNTANT

Unless you know how to file state and federal tax returns for your business, hire an accountant!  An accountant can file on your behalf, making sure you are protected from the IRS by doing things correctly. The best way to find an accountant is by asking for recommendations from your friends in the industry.  Don’t have a great recommendation, check out a company like H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt.

STEP 2: GATHER ALL OF YOUR COMPANY INFORMATION AND LEGAL DOCUMENTS

You will need your Federal Tax ID number, proof of ownership of any assets (cameras, lenses, computers, etc), and a categorized list of expenses so your accountant can see where your money was spent throughout the year.  If you have made any owner contributions to the business or have taken any distributions over the course of the year, you will need a record of this as well.

STEP 3: SUBMIT, SIT BACK + RELAX

Your accountant will put together your tax return and send to you to review.  You will then sign the return and send it back to your accountant who will file it electronically with the IRS.  YOU’RE DONE!  YAY!  Take some time to celebrate with your friends.:)

HAPPY FRIDAY!

LOVE THIS! I am never thought I would say this…EVER! but I am actually really excited to meet with my accountant tomorrow! She’s seems super nice and awesome, and now that I’m prepared, I can’t wait to check this off the list! Thanks again Matt and Amy! I couldn’t have done it without you! Well, maybe I could have…but it definitely wouldn’t have been as easy! :)
